Gov. Doug Ducey signed HB2318 into law on Monday. The bill makes it illegal to drive while holding a mobile device. Devices that can be used in a hands-free mode or are integrated with the vehicle’s control interface are exempt.
What is prohibited?
- Holding or supporting a wireless device while driving
- Writing or reading any text-based communication while driving
- Watching, recording or broadcasting video while driving
Exemptions:
- Hands-free voice-to-text
- Stopped at traffic light
- Reporting an emergency
The bill takes effect immediately with penalties (expected to be $75-250 per violation) beginning January 2021.
